Standards and Precautions

Mining operations are said to be one of the most dangerous working environments in the world, mainly due to intensive work load in relatively confined spaces. For that reason, safety is essential for  . Accidents and incidents may happen anytime, anywhere affecting not only workers but also their families, friends and also colleagues.

In order to avoid any incidents, first thing to do is to establish a solid understanding on the work equipment, material and process. It is known that insufficient planning and spontaneous changes may create massive confusions and increase the potential risks.

Safety begins with using proper protective equipment. Hard helmets, steel armored boots and easily visible jackets are the primary equipment. Besides safety goggles, gloves and ear plugs must be worn, where needed. Personal protective equipment not only makes us more visible but also points out the message how important safety is. People working in mining operations carry the responsibility of assuring safety for not only themselves but also for their colleagues.

Not limited to employees, contractors and visitors also have to use protective equipment and be informed about potential risks, regardless of the period of their stay on site.

Machineries are intensively used in mining operations and associated facilities. Nowadays, machines are capable of completing tasks much more effectively compared to hours of efforts of employees. However, human factor is critical for safe operation of machines. Operator fatigue and lack of concentration are major reasons of occupational accidents. In order to prevent this, operators have to fulfill all related safety regulations. Employees which have to work close to machinery have to be very cautious and try to stay alert for potential risks. Safe operation of heavy duty machinery is dependent on the operator and nearby workers.

Sustaining a safe working environment starts with answering some basic questions, like:

  • “What can possibly go wrong?”
  • “What is the possibility of that to happen?”
  • “How bad can it be?”
  • “What should be done about this?”

has a safety management system with answers to all these basic questions. Besides, training of employees about all safety regulations and ’s safety system, is regarded as an initial step for preventing any safety incidents. It should be noted that, “Human is the key factor to assure safety”.

As a result of the safety management system followed by , no LTI (lost time injury) has happened in any operations undertaken, since 2003.
